Introducing Mayco Elements Low Fire Glaze, available in convenient 4 oz. or 16 oz. jars. Inspired by the beauty of nature, these glazes are meticulously designed to replicate the visual allure, dynamic movement, and captivating interest typically associated with mid-range and high fire glazes. Crafted specifically for firing in cone 06/05 oxidation kilns, Elements™ and Elements™ Chunkies offer artists a versatile array of possibilities within a single product, where glaze application techniques, firing temperatures, and ceramic shapes all contribute to the final outcome.
Elements™ glazes boast a distinctive two-tone effect, featuring a primary color alongside a secondary "float" color. When applied to intricate details, the float color elegantly accents the crevices, adding depth and dimension to your artwork. However, it's important to note that both application methods and firing processes can significantly influence the appearance of the main color and float.
For optimal results, ensure proper preparation by shaking the jar for five to six seconds before use. Dispense the glaze onto a palette and apply it with a soft brush or preferred decorating tool, such as a sponge or stamp. To prevent contamination, avoid dipping your brush directly into the jar, especially when using multiple glazes. Apply three to four coats evenly onto your piece, maintaining consistency in direction and saturation for each coat.
To achieve the desired effect, Elements™ glazes are designed to mature at shelf cone 06 (999°C or 1830°F). For large surface areas, we recommend using a broad, soft fan brush and moistening it with water prior to application. Each coat should be allowed to dry thoroughly before applying the next, ensuring a smooth and uniform finish. During firing, a medium ramp rate of 250°F per hour at shelf cone 06 is recommended, although higher temperatures are possible with testing.
While Elements™ glazes are considered food-safe, some variations may exhibit surface textures such as cracks and crevices, particularly when applied to low fire earthenware clay bodies. To mitigate this, firing at mid-range or high fire temperatures can eliminate surface texture, rendering the glaze suitable for dinnerware use. However, caution is advised, and testing is recommended to ensure compatibility with specific clay bodies and firing conditions.
